What started with a love for writing, grew into a new understanding of how media affects the world around us. As I was faced with the daunting task of deciding what I would study at the University of Florida, all of my goals related to attending a good law school. I have always been a gifted public speaker and writer, so law seemed like a good fit for me. As I successfully made my way onto the University of Florida's mock trial team, my eyes were opened to a whole new world of opportunities in the legal field. Although I learned the process quickly and became an award-winning competitor, I missed being able to truly use my artistic intuition. After feeling uninspired in my position on the team, I realized I did not fit with the community of cutthroat professionals that surrounded me. My optimism slowly diminished and I sought a way to reconnect with my creativity while still maintaining my logical reasoning skills.

That's when I found climbing.

I caught on fast, and was quickly absorbed into the welcoming and supportive environment the sport was built on. I befriended an employee at The Knot who happen to run the social media accounts for the start-up gym. She expressed how overwhelmed she was with the duties that came with organizing an upcoming climbing competition The Knot was hosting. I offered my help, even though my strengths were in writing and not photography or videography.

After the competition, the CMO thanked me for my contributions. Soon after, my social media friend announced she was moving out of Gainesville... and told me she recommended me as the replacement for her job. I took over her social media tasks as a brand new position at the gym: Social Media and Digital Content Manager. From there, I was given the support to learn new technical skills with media equipment and software, as well as how to apply the tactics I absorbed from my coursework at the University of Florida into the context of climbing. I found that my true love was videography and video editing, and quickly caught on to the tricky world of photography. Having the ability to combine all of my passions into a career was a game changer; It gave me the skills and resources to be able to contribute to The Knot's brand identity, as well as develop my own.
