Growing from the fallen

The mushrooms following the freeze of North Carolina

March 2023

Winter months bring colder temperatures in North Carolina, and on occasion, a white sheet of snow covers the ground. However, when temperatures drop lower than the state has prepared for, many unexpected effects can disrupt local communities.

December 2022 brought freezing temperatures to Asheville, causing many locally owned businesses to close their doors for weeks. Home owners and restaurants went without water; giving the opportunity of those fortunate enough to have frost-resistant pipes to help others in need.

Successful businesses located in the area provided an open tap of fresh water to anyone struggling.

As the sense of community grew in the Asheville area, there was something else growing as an unexpected consequence of the freezing destruction.

Dead trees and debris littered the previously full forests, destroying habitats that could not bare the harsh weather. From the death on the forest floor sprouted new life, growing just as the sense of community grew within the Asheville city.

Mushrooms, from merely an inch in size to almost a foot in length, reached up into the sky off of the backs of the previous plant life. Leading the majestic recreation of the environment brought with warmer weather, mushrooms were a sign of hope for the fallen forest. It would grow again.
